Project Goals, Challenges and My Approaches

Our goals are to localize the app, website, and printed reports for the Japanese market. As the product designer, I led the redesign of the app, paper report, and website based on insights from the client’s pilot research.

To achieve this, I collaborated closely with the service designer, engineers, and decision-makers from both Nightingale Health Oyj and their Japanese subsidiary, Welltus, Inc. We faced two main challenges:

Team alignment on the MVP

To kick off the project and ensure effective outcomes, we engaged in discussions with client teams from both Helsinki and Japan to understand their goals and concerns, fostering alignment in teamwork and product development. Therefore at the early stage of the project, I:

  • Collaborated with the service designer Risa to plan and conduct a comprehensive kick-off meeting, successfully aligning project goals and enhancing team-wide understanding.

  • Developed an initial user story map to help the client team better adapt to agile workflows.

Redesigning the paper report and app for clear value distinction and user Onboarding

Given that the printed report was a key market entry point in Japan, distinguishing its value from the app and providing a seamless transition for users was essential.

  • Mapping the User Journey: Created touchpoints and opportunities by developing a customer journey map based on business models and pilot research. This highlighted the distinct value of the printed report, offering a quick summary and actionable steps, while the app provided a digital copy, in-depth analysis, and personalized health solutions.

  • Seamless App Access: Implemented QR code scanning for easy access to the app and digital reports, ensuring user privacy and preventing errors such as scanning incorrect reports.

  • Localized Insights: Shared deep knowledge and insights about Japanese customer behavior to help the client understand market differences from Finland, improving product adaptation.

  • Alignment with Business Goals: Collaborated closely with client decision-makers to align design solutions with business objectives. This ensured that the localized design delivered a unique solution for Nightingale’s launch in Japan while maintaining brand identity consistency.

Project outputs

  • Enhanced accessibility to health advice under each index.

Key Takeaways

Effective Kickoff Meetings: A successful kickoff meeting aligns the team not only on tasks but also on values, goals, and ways of working. It serves as an excellent opportunity to build mutual trust within the team.

Visualizing Team Composition: Creating a visual representation of team roles helps each member understand their position and contribution to the project. Revisiting this composition after the project starts allows individuals to see how their role evolves and highlights their vital role, fostering a deeper appreciation of team dynamics and contributions.

Engaging Decision-Makers: Involving decision-makers in the design process and clearly explaining the rationale behind every decision helps them appreciate design choices, even when they have initial reservations. Demonstrating mutual understanding and transparency enhances collaboration and meaningful discussions.
